DAAD-EPOS Scholarship

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a limited number of scholarships to highly qualified applicants.

The current call for applications and the necessary application documents for the scholarship for EPOS studies can be found on the DAAD website.

+ Who can apply?

University graduates from eligible countries with at least two years of relevant professional experience can apply for the scholarship.

+ When can I apply?

  • Master's programs IWRM, NRM and REM: 1 August - 30 September of the year preceding the year of enrolment.
  • Master's program IWRM MENA: 15 November for intake in the winter semester (September) of the following year.
  • Master's program ENREM: 31 January each year

+ What is the duration of the scholarship's validity?

The duration of the scholarship is 24 months.

+ Which admission requirements must be met?

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Necessary academic requirements
  • Expectation of successful studies in Germany (above-average results in the first academic examination – top grades, language skills)
  • Bachelor's degree (usually a four-year degree) in a suitable subject
  • At least two years of relevant professional experience after the first degree (Bachelor) at the time of application
  • Proof of a developmental motivation; scholarship holders are expected to assume social responsibility after the training/scholarship and to initiate and support change processes in their personal and professional environment.

Please review your application materials for completeness (including all required stamps and signatures) and for good scan legibility before submitting.

In addition to the documents required by DAAD, you must submit the following documents:

  • Copy of high school diploma and college entrance exam, if applicable.
  • A letter of motivation, explaining:
    • Personal understanding of natural resource management and development (one sentence).
    • Motivation for applying in relation to your previous experience/training (one paragraph)
    • Motivation for applying in relation to your future ambitions/preferred career in line with the specialization offered by each program (one paragraph)
    • List three main benefits you expect to gain from the program (list)
    • List three major contributions you could make to the program (list)
    • Five arguments about personal qualities and why you think you should be selected (list)
  • A research idea related to the master's program (2 pages).
    • The topic and content of the research idea should be consistent with the course content of the respective master's program
    • The topic must be relevant in the current scientific discussion
    • The paper should be written in a scientifically correct manner (e.g., structure, citation, data quality, sources, consistency)

Documents that do not meet the formal requirements, incomplete documents and late applications will not be considered! Only applications sent to daad-application@th-koeln.de will be processed.


Scholarships in the ENREM Master's Programme (Double-Degree)

CONACyT-DAAD Scholarship

The Master's programme ENREM (German-Mexican Master's Programme Environment and Resources Management) is the first postgraduate programme established within the framework of the Anchor Country Strategy of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Mexican National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT).

The scholarships are provided by:

  • Mexican National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT).
  • German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

Important Notes:

  • The number of DAAD full scholarships and CONACYT partial scholarships is limited.
  • Admission to the Master's programme does not guarantee a scholarship.
  • Consideration for scholarships will be assessed according to the specific requirements of each scholarship provider.
  • No additional application is required to apply for the scholarships.
  • The organisation awarding the scholarship should send you the information about the procedure and deadline for applying for the scholarship.

Cost coverage in the CONACyT DAAD Scholarship

+ Costs covered by CONACyT

  • CONACyT will ONLY cover living expenses. All registration fees must be paid by the student from the scholarship.
  • All other costs related to the studies, such as the flight to San Luis Potosí, to Cologne, the Master's thesis and its defense, as well as the health insurance for the second year, have to be paid by the students themselves.

Living expenses for Mexican and Latin American scholarship holders:

  • The regular monthly scholarship (beca normal) includes the Mexican statutory health insurance for the duration of the studies (maximum 24 months).
  • For the 3rd semester in Germany, you will receive the "beca mixta", an increased amount in addition to the regular monthly scholarship and a one-time small amount for the flight ticket to Germany.

Living expenses for German scholarship holders:

  • Regular monthly scholarship (beca normal) including Mexican state health insurance for the first two semesters in Mexico
  • During the 3rd semester in Germany, you will not receive a scholarship
  • For the 4th semester, you can reactivate the regular monthly scholarship CONACYT if you conduct the field research in Mexico or Latin America and write and defend the Master's thesis in Mexico

The scholarship holders will receive the CONACyT scholarship contract after their arrival in San Luis Potosí.

+ Costs covered by the DAAD

The DAAD will cover living expenses, travel allowance and health insurance for a period of two years. All registration fees must be paid by the students from the scholarship.

For Mexican and Latin American scholarship holders (only countries on the DAC list):

  • Regular monthly scholarship
  • Mexican and German health insurance for the duration of the studies (maximum 24 months).
  • Travel allowance for the flight to Mexico, to Cologne, to the defence of the Master's thesis and back to the home country (depending on DAAD decisions)

Scholarship holders receive the scholarship contract from the DAAD before their arrival in San Luis Potosí.
